What is Stage 1 Remapping?

Your vehicle's ECU controls how the engine behaves: fuel delivery, boost pressure, ignition timing and more. From the factory, these parameters are deliberately conservative: they need to accommodate varying fuel quality across global markets, extremes of temperature, and differing emissions legislations across markets. The result is an engine that's holding back from its true potential.

Stage 1 ECU remapping recalibrates these parameters in software. No hardware modifications, no parts to fit. Just a more optimised calibration that works within the engine's original safety tolerances and maintains factory reliability and service intervals.

The outcome is noticeably more power and torque, sharper throttle response, smoother power delivery across the rev range, and on many engines, potential fuel economy improvements when driven normally.

More Power

Typical gains of 15 – 30% more horsepower. Stronger acceleration and noticeably more confidence on A-roads and motorway overtakes.

More Torque

15 – 30% improvement in torque, the low-down pulling power you feel the moment you accelerate. Particularly noticeable on turbocharged engines.

Sharper Response

Smoother, more linear power delivery and reduced turbo lag on turbocharged engines. The car feels more alive from the first press of the throttle.

Potential Economy

Higher torque means less throttle input at cruise. Drivers who adapt their style after a remap often see real-world fuel savings, particularly on diesel.

Common Questions

Everything you need to know about Stage 1 remapping with JSM

In most cases, yes: a remap may affect your manufacturer warranty if the dealer is able to detect it. Most main dealers don't routinely check for remaps, but if your vehicle is submitted for warranty work and a modification is identified, it can potentially invalidate warranty on affected components. If your vehicle is still within its manufacturer warranty period, this is worth considering carefully. Once the warranty has expired, it is not a concern.

Yes, when carried out by a trained professional using properly developed files. ByteFlash Stage 1 calibrations are engineered to maintain original OEM safety tolerances and preserve the reliability and longevity of your vehicle. The key distinction is between a reputable provider using extensively tested files and a cheap generic map from an unknown source. Your vehicle should also be in good mechanical health before any remap is applied.

Yes. The original ECU file is always retained before any changes are made. The vehicle can be returned to its factory calibration at any time. Useful if you're selling the car, taking it to a dealer for warranty work, or simply want to revert to standard.

Most Stage 1 remaps take between 1 and 2 hours. Some vehicles with more complex ECU systems can take a little longer. You'll be given an accurate estimate when you enquire.

Yes: a remap is a modification and must be declared to your insurer. Failing to disclose it can invalidate your policy. Many insurers will accommodate a Stage 1 remap with little or no premium impact; others may charge more. It is your responsibility to notify your insurer before having the remap carried out.

The vehicle search covers the main ByteFlash catalogue, but if your vehicle doesn't appear it doesn't necessarily mean a remap isn't available. Get in touch and we can check availability directly with ByteFlash.
