Diagnostics, SCR system repair and software solutions for AdBlue faults, carried out mobile throughout the South East.

What is AdBlue?

AdBlue is a urea-based fluid used within the Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) system fitted to most diesel vehicles manufactured from around 2015 onwards. When injected into the exhaust stream, it reacts with the nitrogen oxide (NOx) gases produced during combustion, converting them into harmless nitrogen and water vapour.

The SCR system draws from a dedicated AdBlue tank, typically located underneath the vehicle, and is managed by the ECU. The ECU monitors fluid level, temperature, quality, and the operation of the injector and pump, generating fault codes and dashboard warnings the moment anything falls outside specification.

Unlike most engine warning lights which can be driven through, an unresolved AdBlue fault carries a serious consequence: a countdown timer that, when it reaches zero, prevents the vehicle from restarting.

Common AdBlue Warning Signs

No-Start Countdown

A detected SCR fault triggers a countdown shown on the dashboard. Once it reaches zero, the engine will no longer start until the fault is resolved.

Warning Lights

AdBlue faults trigger multiple dashboard warnings and stored fault codes. These will keep returning if the root cause is not addressed, and the countdown continues to run in the background.

Quality Errors

The SCR system continuously monitors fluid quality. Contaminated, diluted or incorrect-specification AdBlue triggers quality fault codes even when the tank reads as full.

Component Failure

The AdBlue pump, dosing injector and NOx sensors are all prone to failure, particularly on higher-mileage vehicles. Crystallisation within the tank and pipework can also cause faults.

The No-Start Countdown

The most consequential aspect of an AdBlue fault is the vehicle's built-in lockout. Once the ECU determines the SCR system is not functioning correctly, it begins counting down in miles until no restart, displaying the warning prominently on the dashboard.

As the counter approaches zero, warnings increase in urgency. At zero, the engine will not start at all until the fault is cleared. This can leave drivers stranded without warning, often at the most inconvenient moment.

Main dealer repair costs for SCR components regularly run to the thousands of pounds. Where replacement parts are not readily available or are disproportionately expensive, a software solution may be a more practical route depending on the vehicles use.

What We Can Do

Every AdBlue job begins with a full diagnostic read of the SCR system to identify exactly which component or parameter has triggered the fault. Many AdBlue issues are misdiagnosed, resulting in expensive parts being replaced unnecessarily when the actual cause is something far simpler.

Where the fault is component-based, such as a failed dosing injector, a blocked pump, crystallisation in the pipework or a faulty NOx sensor, we can carry out the repair or advise on the most cost-effective course of action.

Where a software solution is the appropriate route, we can recalibrate the ECU to disable the SCR system entirely, removing AdBlue monitoring, fault code generation and the no-start countdown from the vehicle's operating parameters.

Important Notice — Emissions and road legality.

The AdBlue SCR system is an emissions control device required by law on most EU6 diesel vehicles to meet emissions regulations. Under the Road Vehicles (Construction and Use) Regulations it is an offence to drive on a public road a vehicle that has been modified in a way that causes it to no longer meet its original emissions standard. Software recalibration to disable the SCR system is intended to support motorsport and off-road applications only. Any work we carry out is discussed with the customer beforehand, with road legality and intended use taken into consideration.
