What is the EGR Valve?

The Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) valve is an emissions control device fitted to most modern diesel and some petrol engines. Its purpose is to reduce nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions by redirecting a portion of exhaust gas back into the intake manifold, lowering combustion temperatures.

In practice, those recirculated exhaust gases carry soot and carbon deposits with them. Over time, these deposits build up inside the EGR valve and intake manifold. On higher-mileage vehicles in particular, this accumulation becomes one of the most common causes of engine problems.

Once the valve begins to stick or fail, performance, reliability and fuel consumption are all affected. Replacement can often be expensive.

Common EGR Symptoms

Power Loss

A sticking or failed EGR valve restricts airflow into the engine, resulting in noticeably reduced performance and sluggish acceleration.

Warning Lights

EGR faults commonly trigger the engine management light. The fault code will continue to return until the underlying issue is resolved.

Rough Running

Carbon deposits inside the intake manifold and on the valve itself cause rough idling, hesitation and uneven power delivery.

Poor Economy

A malfunctioning EGR valve disrupts the air-to-fuel mixture, which can cause a measurable increase in fuel consumption.

The EGR Delete Solution

An EGR delete removes the valve from the engine's operating parameters entirely using a software recalibration of the ECU. The ECU is reprogrammed to disable EGR operation, and the associated diagnostic checks are removed so no fault codes are generated.

In most cases a software-only solution is sufficient, however if the EGR valve is stuck open, a blanking plate may need to be fitted to physically seal the EGR port. This prevents exhaust gases from reaching the intake regardless of valve position.

Under the Road Vehicles (Construction and Use) Regulations and the Road Traffic Act 1988 it is an offence to use on a road a vehicle which has been modified in such a way that it no longer complies with the air pollutant emissions standards it was originally designed to meet. Removal of emissions control devices is intended to support motorsport and off-road applications.
